Course Description

This course is designed for MA or MFA graduate creative writing students. Graduate students from other disciplines must submit a fiction writing sample to the instructor in order to enroll in the class. This graduate writing course operates as a studio course, meaning the emphasis is on your writing submitted to the workshop. The texts for the class include workshop stories and various handouts (stories/essays) distributed by the instructor. Students submit a total of three workshop stories (30-50 pages in total) at scheduled times throughout the semester. Students must also write detailed critiques for every workshop story, as well come to class prepared to discuss the work. Finally, students read a fair amount of handouts from the instructor and come to class ready to talk about the writing. The work itself, both student writing and the handouts, deals exclusively with literary fiction. No genre material (horror, sci-fi, suspense, romance, etc.), please.
