Course Description

CRANE-BISHOP-RICH We shall read widely in the three poets, interpreting individual poems as themselves, in relation to one another within each author's work, and in terms of comparison and contrast between and among the three authors, with references outward to commonly shared antecedents and comtemporaries. In class discussions, we shall focus intensively on a number of poems selected to plumb each author's range, depth, idiosyncrasies and excellences. A short (6-7 pp.) essay will be due five weeks into the semester. The major interpretive essay (10-15 pp.) will be due near semester's end. Each student will give a 15-20 min. oral report. No final exam. Required texts: Crane, COMPLETE POEMS OF HART CRANE; Bishop, THE COMPLETE POEMS 1927-1979; Rich, ADRIENNE RICH'S POETRY AND PROSE (Norton Crit. Ed.), Other useful books by and about the three poets will be recommended.
