E 325 • Creative Writing: Fiction (Unique #34305 and #34310)
This intermediate fiction writing class will focus primarily on student work, with additional close study of classic and contemporary short fiction. Plot, character, dialogue, description, and "style" will be analyzed and discussed, to be complemented by short written exercises relevant to the topic under discussion. Students are required to write two new short stories during the term; a substantial revision of one of these stories will also be required, along with formal written critiques of each student story. Consistent and thoughtful participation in class discussion is expected. Instructor will assign frequent outside reading: short stories, novel excerpts, essays, and interviews.
