Course Description

This course will be conducted along the lines of a workshop, with emphasis on developing abilities in writing, revising, and analyzing poetry. The quality of the written work, as well as effort, timely completion of assignments, active participation in class discussions, attendance, and the final portfolio will determine your grade. There will handouts of material to be read and discussed. There will also be other assigned exercises and poems to be worked on, at your own pace, and handed in from time to time during the semester. All assignments, no matter how brief, must be typewritten.

A portfolio including your final manuscript of poems will be due toward the end of class meetings (exact date TBA). It should contain:

1. A minimum of six substantial poems-most recent version plus earlier drafts. These should be poems on which you have received feedback from the class and/or from me, and they should have been written during this semester. Feedback can be from class discussions with the whole class, from within smaller class discussion groups, from office conferences with me, or from written feedback provided by members of the class.
2. All earlier drafts of the above poems (and ALSO all drafts of poems written as in-class or take-home exercises). If you write on the computer, save your drafts and print them out periodically.
3. The annotated copies of work that you have received back from others in the class (again: be sure to sign the comment sheets that you annotate and give to others).
4. Poems/exercises written in class (these may be revised and used as part of the manuscript, but in any case they should be typewritten and handed in, even if unrevised.)
