Course Description
In this course we will read Beowulf in the original Old English, using the classic edition of F. Klaeber, and therefore translating about 250 lines a week. Students must be able to demonstrate a good reading knowledge of Old English to register. Translation will be the main business of the class, but there will be a short paper exploring some aspect of this much-studied poem.
Grading Policy
Daily in-class translation, which presupposes attendance 50% Grammar exam, about week 4 20% 5-10 page paper, due about week 12 10% Quizzes, if necessary 20%
