Course Description
Late Victorian Fiction-- In this course we will study a number of major works of prose fiction from the late Victorian period, focusing on the interest the period had in representing "other" worlds, and the ways in which both the subject matter and the codes of conventional realism were challenged. Our topics will include the rise of decadence and aestheticism, the representation of Africa, India, and other imperial domains, and the development of science fiction. We will sample a broad range of works and pay special attention to novels by Stevenson, Conrad, Wells, and Kipling.
