Course Description
This course will take up Shakespeares early comedies, including The Taming of the Shrew, Much Ado About Nothing, A Midsummer Nights Dream, and The Merry Wives of Windsor. While learning how these works have been interpreted by others - including critically, and in performance - we will try to develop vocabulary and paradigms through which we can come to understand Shakespeares relationship to the genre of comedy.
Grading Policy
A series of shorter papers (3-5 pp. each) will lead up to a research essay on a topic of the students choosing at semesters end. This is a significant writing component course, and at least 50% of the final grade will come from assigned papers.
