Course Description

An intermediate level course in writing short fiction. Students must have successfully completed E 325, Fiction, or equivalent elsewhere. This course is oriented towards literary fiction (by contrast with primarily commercial fiction). That is to say, no sci-fi, adventure, dungeons-and-dragons, spy, gothic, detective, romance, or youth market fiction: all of those genres represent areas of specialization not my own. All literary styles, realist and non-realist, are welcome.

Most of the course will be workshop: group discussion of student work. Each student will commit to 3 dates on which s/he will submit a new story in enough copies for everybody in the class to have one.

To address issues about fiction that come up, we may do some reading from The Norton Anthology of Short Fiction, Longer 6th edition.

Grading Policy

Three short stories. Regular attendance, preparation, and participation.
