E 314V • Mexican American Literature and Culture
9:00 AM-10:00 AM
This course will provide an introduction to Mexican American literature produced from the 1950s through today. Our journey will take us from the Rio Grande/Rio Bravo and the Nueces, to Raúl R. Salinas Child Vision at Town Lake, Sandra Cisneros Women Hollering Creek, and Teresa Palomo Acostas Nile; from South Texas to the Llano Estacado of Texas and New Mexico; and from farms, pastures and the desert to labor camps, factories, prisons, kitchens, hospitals, bars, academia, convenience stores, freeways, and gardens.
We will think about Gregorio Cortez as given us by Américo Paredes in With His Pistol in His Hand, a version of the same man portrayed by Edward James Olmos in The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez, and a radically new Gregorio Cortez as played by Antonio Banderas in Robert Rodríguezs Spy Kids and Spy Kids 2. We will ponder the distances between Rodolfo (Corky) Gonzales I Am Joaquín/Yo Soy Joaquín and Xavier Reséndezs I Am Wonder Woman/Yo Soy La Mujer Maravilla, and between Cherrie Moragas Loving in the War Years and Denise Chávezs Loving Pedro Infante.
1) Read all assigned texts, view all assigned films and videos, attend class consistently, and participate thoughtfully in class discussions on a regular basis. Failure to attend class consistently will result in a lower grade; missing 6 or more classes may result in failure.
2) Write two papers (8-10 pages each) on assigned texts or texts chosen in consultation with instructor.
3) Make two brief oral in-class presentations (5-7 minutes each) related to class readings.
4) Either attend or participate in two live local events, or conduct one service project related to the course. Write one short (1-2 page) response on the above activity and also report orally to the class (5-7 minutes).
