Course Description
This course will examine selected poetry of the English Renaissance with a focus on issues of composition, structure, and meaning. In addition to analyzing short poems by such authors as Wyatt, Sidney, Shakespeare, Donne, Herbert, and Marvell, we will look at excerpts from various poetic treatises of the era in an attempt to understand how poets viewed form, metaphor, and language.
Grading Policy
Two or more short papers (3-4 pp. each) on various poems and topics will lead up to a research essay of 12-15 pp. at semesters end.
