Course Description
This course will cover the major works of British literature from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century. Among the authors and poets covered will be Chaucer, Spenser, Marlowe, Shakespeare, Donne, Milton, Swift, Pope, Johnson, Walpole, Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Keats, Mary and Percy Shelley, Tennyson, the Brownings, Dickens, Hardy, Woolf, Joyce, T.S. Eliot, D.H. Lawrence, Auden, Greene, and Johnny Rotten. Of particular concern will be the political, often revolutionary background to many of the works, and the hostile, elitist reaction of literature to popular culture over the last two centuries.
