Course Description

E320L surveys over a century of English literature from the Restoration (1660) to the French Revolution (1789). The course will consider each of the major genres of the period in relation to its historical context. Particular attention will be given to satire, the dominant literary mode of the period, which we will find in more than one genre. The class will be conducted as a discussion, not as a lecture, and all students will be expected to participate.
