Course Description

We shall read widely in the three poets, interpreting individual poems as themselves, in relation to one another within each author's work, and in terms of comparison and contrast between and among the three authors, with references outward to commonly shared antecedents and contemporaries. In class discussions, we shall focus intensively on a number of poems selected to plumb each author's range, depth, idiosyncrasies and excellences

Texts (all in paperback): Galway Kinnoll, A New Selected Poems (mariner Books/Hongton Mifflin). Adrienne Rich, Adrienne Rich's Poetry and Prose, edd. B.B. and A. Gelfi (Norton Critical Edition). Wallace Stevens, The Palm at the End of the Mind, ed. Holly Stevens (Vintage). __________________, The Necessary Angel (Vintage). __________________, Opus Posthumous (Vintage) Optional.
