Course Description
This course presents an introduction to some of the basics of language as a biological, social and historical entity by concentrating on the structure, sociolinguistics, and history of the English language. We'll start by looking at how children acquire language and at how they are socialized to become competent speakers within their communities. We'll also briefly examine the history of English from its beginnings to changes taking place in current English, and we'll look at some of the basic structure of English and at non-standard dialects and their places within modern America.
