The English major requires a total of thirty three semester hours, including twenty-four hours of upper-division coursework. The twenty four upper-division hours are divided into eight three-hour courses that are used to fulfill the English areas. There are six areas; each student must take one course in each area and another two courses in any area(s) they choose. The six areas are: Area I, Single or Dual Author; Area II, Literary Period or Survey; Area III, Literary Genre or Theme; Area IV, Language or Writing; Area V, Comparative or Interdisciplinary; Area VI, Senior Seminar. Students can complete their areas in any order they like, with the exception of the senior seminar which can only be taken by students classified as seniors.
