"Fixing Up the House of Race with Richard Rodriguez"
Sandra Soto's presentation offers a queer consideration of the
neoliberal paradigm of citizenship elaborated by Richard Rodriguez over
the past 25 years. Whether involving his childhood suburban
single-family home, his adult urban Victorian house queerly quartered
into a set of apartments, or the transcendent "brown study" in which he
writes, this presentation closely examines the meanings Rodriguez
attributes to domestic space and architecture and finds that here
racialization and sexual desire collide in ways that Rodriguez himself
cannot seem to manage.
