James Magnuson is a Professor in the English Department.  He received his M.S. from the University of Wisconsin in 1964.

Recent Publications include: Windfall (1999), Ghost Dancing (1989), Money Mountain (1984).

Creative Writing: Workshop in Fiction

E385N will be a workshop course in which students will present three significant pieces of work, either short stories or sections of a novel. All submissions should be under twenty-five pages. Additional reading will include fiction by Alice Munro, Jennifer Egan, Jim Crace and Denis Johnson.

Prerequisites: C L 315, E 603B, 316K, or T C 603B.

Description: This is a workshop for the beginning fiction writer. A series of brief exercises will introduce students to the problems of plot, character, conflict, and dialogue. The students will also write three short stories and present them for criticism to the class.

Texts: Will be announced.

Requirements & Grading: Attendance is mandatory. The final grade will depend on the quality of the student’s work and on class participation.
