Fall 2014 Orientation Schedule


Monday, August 18, 2014

9:30a-10:30a, Calhoun Hall (CAL), Room 100.  General welcome and introduction.  Required for every new student.

10:30a-10:40a, BREAK.

10:40a-11:45a, Calhoun Hall (CAL), Room 100.  General advising and Ph.D. interest groups for all new Literature and Rhetoric students.

10:40a-11:45a, Calhoun Hall (CAL), Room 300 (Atwood Library).  General advising for all new New Writers Project (Creative Writing) students.

12:00p-1:30p, Calhoun Hall (CAL), Room 103 (Grad Student Lounge).  New Student Luncheon, for all new students, returning grad students, and faculty.

1:00p-1:45p, Calhoun Hall (CAL), Room 210 (English Graduate Advising Office). Prescheduled Individual Advising Appointments for English MA/PhD Students.

2:00p-4:15 PM, Perry-Castaneda Library (PCL), Room 1.124. Required UT library and HRC orientation for all incoming English graduate students. This will be a hands-on introduction to the resources available to you at the UT Libraries and the HRC, successful search strategies, and library services, led by Kristen Hogan (hogank@austin.utexas.edu) and Jean Cannon (jeanmcannon@utexas.edu).  The Library/HRC orientation will begin in PCL 1.124, from 2-3pm and then the group will walk to the HRC for Jean's presentation from 3:15-4:15.

4:30p-5:00p, Parlin Hall (PAR), Room 312.  Professional Skills Information session, led by current grad student Regina Mills.

5:00p, Dog & Duck Pub, 406 W. 17th St. (at the corner of Guadalupe & 17th).  EGG (English Graduate Group) Happy Hour. Get to know your fellow first-year students and some of the other English grad students as well at the Dog & Duck. We hope that you all will join us!

4:00p, Calhoun Hall (CAL), Room 103 (Grad Student Lounge).  Campus Tour led by current grad students Reid Echols and Zach Hines; Walking tour to popular destinations on campus for English grad students: Harry Ransom Center (HRC), Texas Union, Main Building ("the Tower") and the Office of Graduate Studies, PCL, and finishing in time for the happy hour.

5:00p, Hole in the Wall (2538 Guadalupe St).  EGG (English Graduate Group) Happy Hour. Get to know your fellow first-year students and some of the other English grad students as well at the Hole in the Wall. We hope that you all will join us!

Stop by at your convenience- it only takes a few minutes.  Remember, you must ensure that your tuition bill is paid and confirm your attendance online with "My Tuition Bill" for your registration to be complete.
