Summer To-Do list
Are you thinking about going on the job market next year?
Litmus test: According to your advisors/professors, are you ready? Can you speak about your dissertation in the past tense? Do you have the PhD in hand? If not, will you defend prior to the next MLA? Do you have at least one publication in a peer-reviewed journal?
Things to do over the upcoming summer.
--become a member of MLA
--subscribe to JIL (Job Information List), find access to Chronicle of Higher Ed
--read old issues of Chronicle of Higher Education and JIL listings from this year
--think about how you will market yourself in terms of available categories
ASSEMBLE YOUR TEAM
--line up referees (4)
--have a time-table for feedback on penultimate drafts of job materials Aug/Sept
--set up a file in the Career Exploration Center
--make sure you are on Patricia Schaub's e-mail list for Placement activities in Fall
--if diss not finished, devise game plan with your committee and set formal defense date
DRAFT MATERIALS (models in folder in Grad Office)
--formal letter of application
