Graduate

Two years' college credit in a foreign language, or its equivalent, is required for students who are admitted to graduate study in English. Well-qualified students are admitted on the condition that they satisfy the foreign language requirement in a timely manner.

Options for fulfilling the foreign language requirement before completion of the MA:

A sequence of four or more semesters of a language other than English (with a grade of "B" or better in the last semester) taken prior to graduate admission. (The final course is to have been completed no earlier than four years prior to matriculating in the graduate program.)

Coursework at UT: A sequence of four or more semesters of a language other than English, or intensive foreign language coursework covering the content of the four-semester sequence, passed with a grade of "B" or better in the last semester.

Completion of a UT 301 translation course with a "Credit". (Course may be taken repeatedly.)

At the discretion of the Graduate Advisor: Compelling evidence of knowledge of a language other than English, such as: a high school degree from a foreign high school; coursework taught in a foreign language at a foreign university; an intensive language course of at least four weeks (if completed with a grade rather than pass/fail); a home language.

Exception: Those who entered the program in fall 2002 or earlier may also satisfy the MA foreign language requirement with a translation exam. Students must translate a 300-word, non-literary passage with the aid of a dictionary in sixty minutes. The exam will usually be administered by a qualified member of the English department. Should no examiner be available or should the student prefer a different examiner, the Graduate Advisor will recruit an examiner from the appropriate UT foreign language department. A grade of "pass" is to be assigned if, in the professor's estimation, the student's performance is equivalent to that of students who have mastered four semesters of study in the foreign language. Students may take the translation option twice.

Options for fulfilling the foreign language requirement before completion of the PhD:

Any of the options listed above for the MA. (If this requirement is fulfilled by coursework, the final course is to have been completed no earlier than six years prior to admission to candidacy for the PhD.)

Advanced competence in your MA foreign language: Completion of at least one upper-division or graduate foreign language or literature course with a grade of B or better. (The final course is to have been completed no earlier than six years prior to admission to candidacy for the PhD.)

Exception: Those who entered the graduate program in fall 2001 or earlier may also fulfill the advanced, single-language option with a translation exam. The examination will usually be administered by a qualified member of the English department. Should no examiner be available or should the student prefer a different examiner, the graduate adviser will recruit an examiner from the appropriate UT foreign language department. Translation examinations will consist of two 300-word passages, one a literary passage, the other a nonliterary passage. The student will be allowed 45 minutes per passage to translate with the aid of a dictionary. A grade of "pass" is to be assigned if, in the professor's estimation, the student's performance is equivalent to that of students in an undergraduate upper-division non-English language or literature course. Students may take the translation exam option twice.
