Dear Incoming Student,

Hello from the English Graduate Group (EGG)! First of all, congratulations on your acceptance to UT Austin. We all know how much information is being thrown at you right now, so in the interest of maintaining your sanity, we'll keep this brief. In a nutshell, EGG is dedicated to ensuring graduate student representation on English Department and university-wide committees, as well as striving to further English graduate student opportunities within our own department.

As a new member of EGG, you will soon be automatically subscribed to an administrative listserve called EGAD, through which you will receive important notifications from the English Graduate office. You will be subscribed using the email address that you provide to the Graduate English office. You will also be invited to subscribe to our listserve, Broken-Eggs, an online discussion group for graduate students in the UT English Department. On Broken-Eggs, you will receive announcements and queries that other students send and will be able to post questions and comments of your own to the group. You may have already joined Broken Eggs to facilitate your hunt for housing in Austin. Looking for tips on housing is just one of many ways in which having on-line access to your fellow graduate students can be beneficial. If you would like to subscribe to Broken-Eggs send an email with no subject line to Majordomo@lists.cwrl.utexas.edu. In the body of the text, write: "subscribe broken-eggs". For a complete list of commands on subscribing, unsubscribing, or other tasks, email Majordomo@lists.cwrl.utexas.edu with the phrase "info broken-eggs" in the body of the message.

We have planned three happy hours so that you can get to know your fellow first-year students and some of the other English grad students as well. The first one will be Tuesday, August 21st, at the Dog and Duck (406 W 17th Street) at 5:00. The second will be at the Crown and Anchor (2911 San Jacinto Blvd.) on Thursday, August 23rd, at 4:30. And the third will be Tuesday, August 28th, the night before classes begin. It will be held at 5:00 at Spiderhouse (2908 Fruth Street).

If you have any questions, please contact one of the members of the EGG Steering Committee-our names and email addresses are listed below. We can't wait to meet you and look forward to seeing you at the happy hours.
