From the Placement Committee
DO:
Be punctual (walk the route between where you are staying and your interview hotels the night before; allow extra time for crowded elevators)
Practice and use a firm handshake
Be prepared to summarize the materials you sent the committee at a moment's notice (write out and memorize a 3-minute digest of your dissertation and also prepare material for the question, "tell us more about your dissertation"
Practice wearing your interview clothes, including all accessories, before you leave home
Carry snacks and/or drinks if you will not have much time between interviews (hotel restaurants will be jammed)
Have appropriate cold-weather outerwear and footwear for trekking between convention hotels, possibly in snowy or wet weather
DON'T:
Accept beverages if offered
Wear your MLA badge because it falls off
Ask sensitive questions (e.g. about department politics)
Reveal personal information
Expect the interview team to know your work
