Earlier this month, Matthew Davies, a fourth-year graduate student specializing in Renaissance (and modern) Drama in the Department of English, received the B. Iden Payne award for Best Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy for his performance as Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing. The awards ceremony, officiated by the Austin Circle of Theaters was held at the newly reopened Long Center. Matthew (stage name, Radford) was a professional actor in London for fifteen years. As an actor and subsequently associate director of Actors From The London Stage, he brought Shakespeare productions to Austin as part of three national tours between 1999 and 2003. The fourth time, he arrived as a grad student. Studies permitting, Matthew continues to work with professional companies in Austin, especially Austin Shakespeare, who produced Much Ado at the Zilker Park open-air theater this summer to crowds sometimes more than a thousand strong.
