Every year English 316K Masterworks of Literature introduces four to five thousand UT undergraduates to the joys of studying literature at a college level. The English department has devoted significant resources over the past fifteen years to improving and refining every aspect of the course. It is taught almost entirely by tenured faculty, many of whom have won major teaching awards, and student response has generally been enthusiastic. The Course Transformation Grant represents an exciting opportunity to leverage our success and develop English 316K into a national model for promoting active student engagement in a large humanities lecture course. Professors Phillip Barrish and Evan Carton, co-leaders of the project, are grateful to be partnering with the Provost's office and the Center for Teaching and Learning in this endeavor.
