Department of English Associate Professor Oscar Casares participated in H-E-B Grocery Company’s Read 3 program in early March with a special in-store reading of Dr. Seuss books to thirty first graders.
The Read 3 program is a literacy campaign that encourages caregivers to read to children at least three times a week and strives to provide books to children in need, with a goal of collecting 1 million books during 2011 and 2012.
Oscar Casares is the author of two noted books, earning him fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Copernicus Society of America, and the Texas Institute of Letters. His collection of stories, Brownsville, was selected by American Library Association as a Notable Book of 2004, and is now included in the curriculum at several universities throughout the country. His first novel, Amigoland, received a “starred review” from Publisher’s Weekly, which called it “a winning novel.” A graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, he teaches and directs the MFA program in creative writing at the University of Texas at Austin.
