Undergraduate
Major requirements
33 semester hours of English, of which 24 hours must be upper-division and 18 hours must be completed in residence at UT Austin:
9 hours lower-division:
RHE 306, Rhetoric and Writing
E 314 preferred (RHE 309 or E 318 may also be used)
E 316K, Masterworks of Literature (American, British, or World)
18 hours upper-division; one course in each of the six English Areas:
Area I, Single or Dual Author
Area II, Literary Period or Survey
Area III, Literary Genre or Theme
Area IV, Language or Writing
Area V, Comparative or Interdisciplinary
Area VI, Senior Seminar
6 additional hours of upper-division English in any Area
Minor Requirements
12 semester hours, including at least 6 hours of upper-division coursework, in any one other department or program in the University.
OR, 12 semester hours, including at least six hours beyond course 507 or the equivalent, in a foreign language not used in Area A.
Six of the required twelve hours must be taken in residence at UT Austin. Courses for your minor may also be used to satisfy BA Area Requirements, but no course may be used for both your major and your minor.
