Undergraduate

Curriculum

The Undergraduate English Association hosts a variety of events each semester to encourage a sense of community among majors while simultaneously assessing their needs. The most popular events include the annual student survey, volunteering with 40 Acres Fest and Explore UT, as well as book clubs and off-campus socials. In the past, UEA successfully petitioned for the Communication school's "Introduction to Screenwriting" course to be cross-listed with English, and the organization continues to serve the needs of the students. UEA is currently working with the English department to address the need for more sections of popular courses, such as creative writing.

Faculty Relations

The Academic Chair organizes students to communicate directly with the department and encourages more direct contact between faculty and students.  This includes the annual student survey, inviting professors and other guests to speak before the group, and serving as a liaison to address student
concerns.

Volunteering

UEA members seek to establish relationships with literacy-oriented volunteer organizations around Austin, for example Inside Books Project and Literacy Austin. All UEA members and non-affiliated English majors alike are encouraged to volunteer. Information and support (like carpools) are provided for every event.

Socials

UEA's social events include bimonthly happy hours, coffee house meet-and-greets, and movie nights. There is also a book group each semester for UEA members interested in reading up on the Classics or who have an interest in staying abreast of contemporary literature.

Creative Writing

Each semester, UEA hosts a creative writing meeting. Members and non-members alike are encouraged to attend, as participants will have the opportunity to read their work aloud and receive helpful (and friendly) criticism.
