FR 390L • The Enlightenment

This course will serve as a general introduction to 18th-century literature and thought. We will begin with the Battle of the Anciens and the Moderns and end with the Revolution. Representative works will illuminate both the genres and the themes of the age, from Rococo to the Revolution. Some of the authors under consideration will be Voltaire, Diderot, , Rousseau, Montesquieu, Graffigny, , Beaumarchais, Riccoboni and Sade. Music, slides, original artifacts from the period and at least one field trip will be included. Students will also visit an exhibit or two.
