Course Description

This course is designed as a survey of the major French film directors from 1895 to the present. It aims at presenting different cinematic styles and techniques. In addition the films are treated as cultural documents which speak to us about particular social, literary, historical, and anthropological aspects of French society through the years. The opportunity to write on different topics will enable students to appreciate the richness and complexity of the filmic text. Assignments * Seven essays of 650-700 words, 12 pt. and double-spaced. Essays must be handed in to the instructor on the date specified in the syllabus. Essays turned in late will have their grade lowered.
* Short readings in Creative Encounters or course packet
* For required films and readings students should prepare 3 comments which will be collected each time.
*Each student will make a short presentation and lead a general discussion on a film screened in the course.
Attendance: Regular attendance at films and lectures is required. Students are expected to come to class prepared to discuss the film. More than two absences without written excuse will lower the grade. Exams: Based on films discussed in class, assigned readings, and class lectures.
