Course Description

This course will be taught in French.
The course will present the span of the arts as they developed in France, from prehistoric cave art to the contemporary period - yes, a long and full span. Highlighted will be the succeeding styles and their principal features: romanesque, gothic, Renaissance, baroque, classicism [Louis XIV], rococo [Louis XV], neo-classicism [Louis XVI and Empire], romanticism, realism, Second Empire, impressionism and post-impressionism, symbolism, art nouveau, the advent of modernism, fauvism, cubism, surrealism, art deco, abstract art, etc. Chiefly studied in relation to successive periods and styles will be the visual arts, sculpture, architecture, formal gardens, and the decorative arts. An opportunity to acquaint onself with representative samples of the music of each period may be arranged, though not for formal study. Class meetings will consist of: (1) lectures presenting each artistic style/period and relating the latter to their sociocultural and political background, in conjunction with (2) the viewing of a broad selection of representative works; (3) a question-and-answer period or general discussion. A course web site that parallels and reinforces the in-class viewings is available to help the student review and study the material. Complementary and/or supplementary web sites will be recommended for viewing.

Grading Policy

Eight short "commentaires" in French (1 p.) : 20% One essay, length 4 p.: 15% Note : The first 4 "commentaires" and the essay can be resubmitted for further reworking and improvement in accordance with Substantial Writing Component course requirements. 5-10 min. quizzes on the readings and recommended website viewings : 15% Two hour exams [through 1800; 1800-present] : 25% + 25% = 50% Evaluation of the commentaires and essays: 60% on the content, 40% on the quality of the written French. Evaluation of the quizzes and exams: 100% on content.
