FR 383M • STRUCTURE OF FRENCH: SYNTAX AND SEMANTICS

This course is an introduction to the linguistic analysis of modern French (syntax, semantics). It presumes no previous knowledge of linguistics, although an elementary knowledge of traditional grammatical terminology is expected. The course will have two parts: (i) fundamentals of linguistic analysis; (ii) the structure of the French sentence. Primary emphasis will be on acquiring the skills needed for syntactic analysis. A secondary goal is to become acquainted with the principles and methods of modern linguistic research.
ASSIGNMENTS: Regular homework assignments (readings and problem sets).
Written homework assignments: 25%. Two midterms: 20% each. Final exam: 35%. The final will be held at the time and place indicated in the Schedule of Classes.
