Course Description

This course will focus on a wide variety of writings in the vernacular in the Italian Middle Ages and Renaissance. On the one hand, we shall examine works of popular culture: carnival songs, burlesque poetry, mock epics, and writings with gross comic strategies to them. On the other hand, we will examine works of elite culture: treatises, Petrarchan sonnets, polished romances. Some of the authors discussed in the course will be (probably): Dante, Boccaccio, Ariosto, Castiglione, Giovanni della Casa, and Petrarch.
