FR 359 • FRENCH GRAMMAR

The purpose of this course is to improve the students' ability to speak and write correct and idiomatic French at an intermediary level through analysis of some of the major difficulties of French grammar. In studying given topics, emphasis will be both on theoretical understanding via grammatical analysis and on practical application through written exercises (mostly translations from English to French). The topics studied should reflect the needs of the participants, whose input into the organization of the course is important. The course will also involve a systematic review of regular and irregular verbs.
Regular homework to be prepared for in-class discussion and written assignments to be handed in for a grade (25%). Three in-class written exams (75%). FINAL EXAM: no
READINGS: Required: (i) Hawkins, Roger & Richard Towell. French grammar and usage. Lincolnwood, Illinois: NTC Publishing Group. (ii) Compact Oxford Hachette French/English Dictionary. Students are strongly encouraged to use also a monolingual French dictionary (recommended Le Petit Robert )
