FR 359 • VARIATION IN FRENCH PRONUNCIATION

The goal of this course is to engage students in the linguistic analysis of the pronunciation of French as it is actually spoken by real speakers, including by non-native speakers. We will examine the historical, social and individual factors that lead to such variation. The course contains three modules: (1) review and phonetics and practice with transcription; (2) focus on aspects of the sound system of French that varies across dialects and speakers and (3) performing linguistic analyses of different regional dialects as spoken by real speakers.
