Course Description

French 310K concentrates exclusively on developing the skill of reading. All readings are in French, while class discussions and all writing about the texts are in English. Alternative to FR 312K for students who prefer to concentrate exclusively on improving reading knowledge rather than working on all four skills. Classes are conducted in English and all work is from French to English. Readings focus on a variety of contemporary, historical, cultural and literary topics, and they are selected to provide material for discussion and reflexion about issues, both current and historical, from around the francophone world. Topics include literature, social sciences, history, fine arts, popular culture, and current events. In addition to traditional print sources, articles from the WWW are discussed. Film segments (with subtitles) present visual texts to enrich students' understanding of the cultural settings, both historical and contemporary, of readings. Goal: For students to develop reading strategies and to gain the confidence that they can continue to read texts of interest beyond this class. The only subsequent course counting toward the language requirement which is available in the UT program is 310L. Students may, however, register for FC (French Civilization) courses. Only one of the following may be counted: FR 310K, 612, 312K.
