Course Description

This course will consist of group and individual work focusing on the practical aspects of translation as a means to expand students' resources by practicing and improving grammar, style and lexicon. We will compare selected originals and their sometimes multiple translated versions, and translate a variety of texts--literature as well as articles and essays, ads, screenplays, and comic books. Translation exercises will be from English into Italian, except for one short individual project from Italian into English. Emphasis will be on grammatical correctness rather than literary sophistication, and gaining exposure to different types of language and register. Group work and discussion of each translation will provide an opportunity for exploring issues pertaining to the history, theory and practice of translation, as well as learning how to use dictionaries and reviewing specific grammatical problems.
