Course Description

The course will feature major representative examples of French short fiction - contes, nouvelles, récits, and narrative prose poems - of the late 17th through the 20th centuries. Each work will be situated in its time and in terms of literary & cultural history; attention will be given to formal and stylistic particularities.

Grading Policy

Notes de lecture (brief comments on & responses to the texts): 30%
Mid-Term paper [5 p,]: 30%
Final Take-Home Exam/Paper: 30%
Contributions to discussion: 10%
