French Teacher Workshop: French Phonetics and Pronunciation

Mon, June 8, 2009 • HRH 4.102B, Computer Lab

The Department of French and Italian of the University of Texas is pleased to announce a workshop for all teachers of French:

French Phonetics and Pronunciation

June 8-10, 2009

The workshop, including course materials and final luncheon, is free of charge.

The opening session will take place in the French Department Lounge, Room 2.118 of Homer Rainey Hall on 21st Street, just west of the Littlefield Fountain, across from the Dobie Mall.  Other sessions will be in the HRH Computer Lab Classroom, HRH 4.102B.

The focus of this year's workshop will be on French phonetics and pronunciation.  In addition to readings and lectures, participants will also take part in discussions, hands-on activities and pronunciation practice. Although the emphasis will be on standard French, we will explore regional variations such as Canadian French and the French of Southern France.  We will also discuss how pronunciation varies as a result of different registers within language use.  Finally, in addition to the individual sounds of the language, we will also explore the prosody of French, which includes intonation, accentuation, and liaison.  The workshop will culminate with a lunch offered by the Department of French and Italian at the beautiful new Campus Club in the ATT Conference Center.

To register email Nancy Guilloteau at nguilloteau@mail.utexas.edu by Friday, May 22. Participants will be given a packet of materials to accompany the workshop.  I look forward to seeing you in June!
