Julia Herschensohn of the University of Washington presents: Representation and processing of nominal features in L2 French
Representation and processing of nominal features in L2 French
In second language acquisition research there exists the question of whether and to what extent the first language affects the acquisition of a second language, particularly when the grammatical features of functional categories are parametrically distinct in each language. Dr. Herschensohn argues that rather than being viewed as a matter of distinct parameters, this question should be rephrased in more gradient terms of processing. Furthermore, transfer, even on a superficial level, does not account for all morphosyntactic error types. She will also discuss the processing of grammatical gender and number in L2 French and Spanish, looking at grammaticality judgements, reaction times and ERPs.
