ROME STUDY PROGRAM

 

ITC F349 – Rome

Rome in Words, Images and Music

 

Instructor: Daniela Bini

 

 

Course Description:

 

The course will briefly sketch the rich life of the Eternal City through literary texts, architecture, painting, sculpture, lyric opera and cinema. Choosing some pivotal periods in its history, we will learn of ancient Rome from Livy, Ovid and Virgil, but also from the Forum and the Ara Pacis.  Michelangelo and Raphael will take us into the magnificence of Renaissance Rome, and with Borromini and Bernini will enter its sumptuous Baroque palaces and churches.  Giacomo Puccini’s opera Tosca will lead us into the Risorgimento movement, the revolts against the Pope and its temporal power. Fascism will be examined with Moravia’s novel The Conformist, and Roberto Rossellini’s Open City. We will conclude with Federico Fellini’s films La dolce vita and Roma that well demonstrate the director’s ambivalent feelings for this unique city where decadence and beauty coexist.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

 

In ITL 601 C, students will study eleven of the sixteen chapters of the textbook Avanti!, do the exercises on the online workbook that accompanies Avanti! and read English Grammar for Students of Italian as a grammar reference, at home and, if possible, in class.  

By the end of ITL 601 C, students will:

 

  • be able to carry on a conversation in Italian with good pronunciation, using all
  • the verbal tenses and moods learned in ITL 601 C;
  • possess a sizeable vocabulary;
  • be capable of understanding and discussing simple cultural topics;
  • read short essays;
  • write short compositions in Italian using grammatically correct prose.

 

Class time will be primarily developing the ability to speak and understand the target language and group activities will be largely used; students will be active participants in the learning process. Since class time must be devoting to practicing the Italian language, students are required to have prepared the assigned homework for each given day; students should expect to spend at least 12 hours every week for homework. This course is for beginner students of Italian; if you have been already exposed to the Italian language, you should take a placement test in accordance with the UT policies on academic dishonesty.

GRADE DISTRIBUTION / COURSE REQUIREMENTS IN DETAIL:

 

(1) Four Tests on grammar and vocabulary- There will be four chapter tests during

the semester, one every two chapters. All will have listening comprehension and written exercises.

 

(2) Final Exam- The final exam will be comprehensive with focus on the vocabulary

and grammatical structured presented in the last three chapters. The final exam will

test students’ reading, writing, and listening skills in addition to vocabulary and grammar.

 

(3) Portfolio- It will contain the following:

Four Compositions: There will be a total of 4 compositions: three will be written at

home - one of which will be revised-  and the last one will be written in class.

Composition # 3 will be revised: students will have the opportunity to make

corrections according to the instructor’s indications on the first draft; the average of the

grade received on the first draft and the grade received on the last version will be the

final grade for Composition # 3.

The topic of the last three compositions will generate from songs chosen by the

instructor or the students; the lyrics of the song, as well as a video, for the last composition (#4)

will be presented in class by the instructor one day prior to the day on which it will

be written in class .

Dialogues: Students will write every week short dialogues focusing on the new vocabulary and grammatical structures and will collaborate with classmates in writing them. Some of them, the longer skits, will be presented in class.

Activities/Projects: During the semester, the instructor will give information about activities/projects that students must include in their portfolio on a weekly base.

 

(4) Oral Report on Italian Culture: Students, divided in groups, will present to the class an oral report: its topics will be chosen among the many cultural notes presented by the first 11 chapters of the textbook Avanti! and presented to the class as a slideshow or through visual aids. Prior to the presentation in class, students will research on the chosen topics, work outside of class with their classmates in the group, and write a first draft.

Each group will show the instructor a first written version of the report’s script three days prior to the class presentation; the instructor will correct it and give it a cumulative grade that will be counted in the Portfolio component.

Each student in the group will receive an individual grade for the presentation, which will be based mainly on pronunciation and content, but also on accuracy in the grammar and use of proper vocabulary.

Each student is expected to speak for about five minutes.

 

 

(5) Attendance, Class Participation, General Oral Performance, and Skits:

Regular classroom attendance is essential to your success in learning Italian.

There are six (6) allowed absences, excused or unexcused.  Starting with the seventh (7th) absence the final grade will be lowered by 1% for each absence (up to 10%).

 

Class participation: daily preparation is also crucial in learning Italian; class participation is evaluated not only by regular classroom attendance, but alsoby the quality of each student’s participation, group activities, and contribution to the lesson. Therefore, it’s also imperative that students prepare daily for class by memorizing vocabulary, studying grammatical structures, and doing all the assigned online homework. A weekly grade based upon the student’ participation will be given and its average will represent 5% of the final grade in the course.

 

General Oral Performance: student’s daily performance in class; conversation, homework, dialogues, and group activities. A weekly grade based upon students’ pronunciation, fluency, accuracy in grammar, and comprehension will be given and its average will represent 5% of the final grade in the course.

 

Skits: Beside their daily performance in class, students will receive a grade (5% of final grade) for writing and acting out in class at least three skits throughout the semester.

Skits’ description: Each chapter of the textbook Avanti! ends with a list of the lexicon utilized in the chapter. At the beginning of Week 2, the instructor will divide the class in groups --from a minimum of 3 to a maximum of 5 people-- and write out a calendar for every day of the week: each group will present in class and act out a brief dialogue that includes as many new words from the final chapter’s list as possible. As we move forward in the book, the length of the dialogue will increase: for example, if in Chapter 2 each student deliver five lines, in the last one, Chapter 11 each student will deliver fifteen or more.

Students will be entirely responsible for the preparation of these dialogues outside of class, utilizing the instructor’s office hours and entering the written dialogue in the portfolio. For the first dialogue, instructors will assist the students in class.

By the end of the semester, each group will have delivered at least three dialogues.

The instructor will assign a grade for each dialogue; the cumulative average will also constitute one of the grades in the class participation and in the general oral performance components.

 

 (6) Online Workbook/Lab Manual: Students should expect to spend at least two hours

daily on homework and class preparation.

 

At home, students will study the assigned pages on the textbook Avanti! prior to class,

read carefully the pertinent grammatical explanations presented by English Grammar

for Students of Italian and complete the Quia online Workbook/Lab Manual* for Avanti!

that offers self-correcting exercises and an audio program.

OBJECTIVES

ITL 507 is the second semester of first year Italian - the sequence being:  a) First year: ITL 506, 507;

b) Second year: ITL 118 (can be taken twice), ITL 612.  Students need to make a C or better to enroll in ITL 612. In the first year Italian, students will learn most of the basic grammar structures of the Italian language. By the end of ITL 507, we expect students to be able to carry on a conversation in Italian with good pronunciation, using all the verbal tenses and moods learned in first year Italian.  Students will posses a sizeable vocabulary and will be capable of understanding cultural topics and discussions on current issues. They will be reading short essays and will be able to write in Italian using grammatically correct prose. Class time will be primarily developing the ability to speak and understand the target language with students being active participants. The lessons will be conducted in Italian and students are required to respond and ask questions in Italian.

1), 2), 3) – Texts and Exams: There will be five chapter tests (chapters 9, 10, 13, 14, 15), one 65- minute exam (chapter 11 and 12) and a cumulative final exam during finals period. All tests and exams have oral and written parts.

 

4) – Compositions: Students will write a total of five compositions and will use a bluebook for all of them. Three of them will be written in class and two at home (homework). The three compositions done in class will have a re-write and the grade of each is the average of first draft and final version.

The first in class composition will be preceded by a writing group activity led by your instructor.

General Oral performance: The ability to communicate in Italian, to speak and to understand. Its evaluation will be based upon students’ oral responses in class and their ability to ask questions in Italian. Pronunciation is an important aspect of your overall oral performance.

Oral Exam: To succeed in the exam, it’s important to practice regularly in class by actively participating in group-activities as well as practicing outside of class; the online oral exercises, studying with other students of 507, attending the events offered by Circolo Italiano (Tavola and Cineclub) will help a great deal. The exams will cover all the grammatical structures and vocabulary studied before the exam’s date.

The exam will take place in class (and in the instructor’s office if more time is needed).

Each student must choose a partner; together they will write a dialogue in Italian that reflects the Italian

culture, the vocabulary and grammatical structures learned thus far; they will then present it in front of

the class. To succeed in the exam, it’s important to be able to carry on the dialogue without using

English.

6) - Class participation and Attendance:

Class participation: Daily preparation and regular classroom attendance are essential to your success in learning Italian.  Class participation is evaluated not only by your regular classroom attendance, but also by the quality of your participation and contribution to the lesson. A wide range of class activities will focus on Italian culture and your instructor will devote class time –ideally 50 minutes per week- to immerse students into Italian culture through songs, videos, clips from movies, group activities such as games, dialogues, improvisation, etc.

In addition, the instructor reserves the right to administer pop quizzes for class participation as needed.

Attendance: Its importance cannot be overemphasized.  Not only will your grade reflect your classroom attendance, but the quality of your learning experience as well.  It is the class that will generate the enthusiasm and support prerequisite to language learning.  Alone you may be able to master word lists and grammar rules, but only in the classroom will these abstractions become part of a living language.

You are allowed eight (8) absences (excused or unexcused) or six (6) if your class meets MTWTH. Starting with the ninth (9th) absence --or with the seventh (7th) if your class meets MTWTH-- your final grade will be lowered by 1% for each absence. For example, if your grade is 81 B- and you have 10 absences (or 8 absences if your class meets on MTWTH), your grade will be lowered by 2% and will become a 79 C+. COURSE OBJECTIVES:

 

In ITL 601 C, students will study eleven of the sixteen chapters of the textbook Avanti!, do the exercises on the online workbook that accompanies Avanti! and read English Grammar for Students of Italian as a grammar reference, at home and, if possible, in class.  

By the end of ITL 601 C, students will:

 

  • be able to carry on a conversation in Italian with good pronunciation, using all
  • the verbal tenses and moods learned in ITL 601 C;
  • possess a sizeable vocabulary;
  • be capable of understanding and discussing simple cultural topics;
  • read short essays;
  • write short compositions in Italian using grammatically correct prose.

 

Class time will be primarily developing the ability to speak and understand the target language and group activities will be largely used; students will be active participants in the learning process. Since class time must be devoting to practicing the Italian language, students are required to have prepared the assigned homework for each given day; students should expect to spend at least 12 hours every week for homework. This course is for beginner students of Italian; if you have been already exposed to the Italian language, you should take a placement test in accordance with the UT policies on academic dishonesty.

GRADE DISTRIBUTION / COURSE REQUIREMENTS IN DETAIL:

 

(1) Four Tests on grammar and vocabulary- There will be four chapter tests during

the semester, one every two chapters. All will have listening comprehension and written exercises.

 

(2) Final Exam- The final exam will be comprehensive with focus on the vocabulary

and grammatical structured presented in the last three chapters. The final exam will

test students’ reading, writing, and listening skills in addition to vocabulary and grammar.

 

(3) Portfolio- It will contain the following:

Four Compositions: There will be a total of 4 compositions: three will be written at

home - one of which will be revised-  and the last one will be written in class.

Composition # 3 will be revised: students will have the opportunity to make

corrections according to the instructor’s indications on the first draft; the average of the

grade received on the first draft and the grade received on the last version will be the

final grade for Composition # 3.

The topic of the last three compositions will generate from songs chosen by the

instructor or the students; the lyrics of the song, as well as a video, for the last composition (#4)

will be presented in class by the instructor one day prior to the day on which it will

be written in class .

Written first draft of the oral report on culture (see Oral Report on Italian Culture)

Dialogues: Students will write every week short dialogues focusing on the new vocabulary and grammatical structures and will collaborate with classmates in writing them. Some of them, the longer skits, will be presented in class.

Activities/Projects: During the semester, the instructor will give information about activities/projects that students must include in their portfolio on a weekly base.

 

(4) Oral Report on Italian Culture: Students, divided in groups, will present to the class an oral report: its topics will be chosen among the many cultural notes presented by the first 11 chapters of the textbook Avanti! and presented to the class as a slideshow or through visual aids. Prior to the presentation in class, students will research on the chosen topics, work outside of class with their classmates in the group, and write a first draft.

Each group will show the instructor a first written version of the report’s script three days prior to the class presentation; the instructor will correct it and give it a cumulative grade that will be counted in the Portfolio component.

Each student in the group will receive an individual grade for the presentation, which will be based mainly on pronunciation and content, but also on accuracy in the grammar and use of proper vocabulary.

Each student is expected to speak for about five minutes.

 

 

(5) Attendance, Class Participation, General Oral Performance, and Skits:

Regular classroom attendance is essential to your success in learning Italian.

There are six (6) allowed absences, excused or unexcused.  Starting with the seventh (7th) absence the final grade will be lowered by 1% for each absence (up to 10%).

 

Class participation: daily preparation is also crucial in learning Italian; class participation is evaluated not only by regular classroom attendance, but alsoby the quality of each student’s participation, group activities, and contribution to the lesson. Therefore, it’s also imperative that students prepare daily for class by memorizing vocabulary, studying grammatical structures, and doing all the assigned online homework. A weekly grade based upon the student’ participation will be given and its average will represent 5% of the final grade in the course.

 

General Oral Performance: student’s daily performance in class; conversation, homework, dialogues, and group activities. A weekly grade based upon students’ pronunciation, fluency, accuracy in grammar, and comprehension will be given and its average will represent 5% of the final grade in the course.

 

Skits: Beside their daily performance in class, students will receive a grade (5% of final grade) for writing and acting out in class at least three skits throughout the semester.

Skits’ description: Each chapter of the textbook Avanti! ends with a list of the lexicon utilized in the chapter. At the beginning of Week 2, the instructor will divide the class in groups --from a minimum of 3 to a maximum of 5 people-- and write out a calendar for every day of the week: each group will present in class and act out a brief dialogue that includes as many new words from the final chapter’s list as possible. As we move forward in the book, the length of the dialogue will increase: for example, if in Chapter 2 each student deliver five lines, in the last one, Chapter 11 each student will deliver fifteen or more.

Students will be entirely responsible for the preparation of these dialogues outside of class, utilizing the instructor’s office hours and entering the written dialogue in the portfolio. For the first dialogue, instructors will assist the students in class.

By the end of the semester, each group will have delivered at least three dialogues.

The instructor will assign a grade for each dialogue; the cumulative average will also constitute one of the grades in the class participation and in the general oral performance components.

 

 (6) Online Workbook/Lab Manual: Students should expect to spend at least two hours

daily on homework and class preparation.

 

At home, students will study the assigned pages on the textbook Avanti! prior to class,

read carefully the pertinent grammatical explanations presented by English Grammar

OBJECTIVES

ITL 507 is the second semester of first year Italian - the sequence being ITL 506, 507, 118 (can be taken more than once), 612.  Students need to make a C or better to enroll in ITL 612. In the first year Italian -506 and 507- students will learn most of the basic grammatical structures of the Italian language. By the end of ITL 507, we expect students to be able to carry on a conversation in Italian with good pronunciation using all verbal tenses and moods.  Students will possess a sizeable vocabulary and will be capable of understanding cultural topics and discussions on current issues.  They will be reading short essays and will be able to write in Italian using grammatically correct prose. The instructor will speak in Italian and the students are required to respond and ask questions in Italian.

1), 2), 3) – Texts and Exams: There will be six chapter tests, one 50- minute exam with oral and written parts and a cumulative final exam with oral and written parts during finals period.

 

4) – Compositions: Students will write a total of five compositions and will use a bluebook for all of them. Two of them will be written in class and three at home (homework). All the three compositions done at home will have a re-write and the grade of each is the average of first draft and final version.

The first in class composition will be preceded by a writing group activity leaded by your instructor.

 

5)  - General oral performance and Oral Exam:

General Oral performance: The ability to communicate in Italian, to speak and to understand. Its evaluation will be based upon students’ oral responses in class and their ability to ask questions in Italian. Pronunciation is an important aspect of your overall oral performance.

Oral Exam: To succeed in the exam, it’s important to practice regularly in class by actively participating in group-activities as well as practicing outside of class; the online oral exercises, studying with other students of 506, attending the events offered by Circolo Italiano (Tavola and Cineclub) will help a great deal. The exams will cover all the grammatical structures and vocabulary studied before the exam’s date.

The exam will take place in class (and in the instructor’s office if more time is needed).

Each student must choose a partner; together they will have a conversation with the instructor that reflects the vocabulary and grammatical structures learned thus far.

Length: approx. 10 minutes per couple. Evaluation’s criteria:

Pronunciation - Comprehension - Ability to ask questions - Vocabulary - Proper use of grammar.

 

6) - Class participation and Attendance:

Class participation: Daily preparation and regular classroom attendance is essential to your success in learning Italian.  Class participation is evaluated not only by your regular classroom attendance, but also by the quality of your participation and contribution to the lesson. A wide range of class activities will focus on Italian culture and your instructor will devote class time –ideally 50 minutes per week- to immerse students into Italian culture through songs, videos, clips from movies, group activities such as games, dialogues, improvisation, etc.

In addition, the instructor reserves the right to administer pop quizzes for class participation as needed.

Be aware that more than 10 absences (excused or not) will automatically result in a zero in this component.

Attendance: Its importance cannot be overemphasized.  Not only will your grade reflect your classroom attendance, but the quality of your learning experience as well.  It is the class that will generate the enthusiasm and support prerequisite to language learning.  Alone you may be able to master word lists and grammar rules, but only in the classroom will these abstractions become part of a living language.

You are allowed eight (8) absences (excused or unexcused) or six (6) if your class meets MTWTH. Starting with the ninth (9th) absence --or with the seventh (7th) if your class meets MTWTH-- your final grade will be lowered by 1% for each absence. For example, if your grade is 81 B- and you have 10 absences, your grade will be lowered by 2% and will become a 79 C+. The effect of the absences on your grade will be calculated at the end of the semester when all the grades are in, including the grade on the final exam.

(Hint: Technology may fail you at the most inappropriate time, so do not wait the last minute to do your homework!) For each chapter you will complete the practice activities in the Centro online workbook (for info on how to access Centro, see below).

ONLINE WORKBOOK: Be sure to complete ALL items in ALL assigned activities to the best of your ability. COURSE DESCRIPTION: In this masterpiece of the western canon, ten young Florentines flee the horrors of the Black Plague of 1348 and use storytelling in order to overcome their fears and console their grief. Through the analysis of these 100 tales and their relationship to the characters who narrate them, we will discuss how Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375) explores the basic elements of the human condition - love and desire, power and politics, virtue and fortune - while at the same time exposing the ambiguities of language and the pitfalls of representation. Considering its reputation as a proto-feminist text and the major scholarly discussion around this notion, we will pay particular attention to the depiction of women and their roles.

The class will be held in English and we will read the Decameron in its entirety in English translation.

Course Description

Designed for highly motivated students, Italian 604 is a six-hour language course stressing basic skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) equivalent to 2 semesters in one (i.e. comparable to ITL. 506 and 507 combined). Since a great deal of material must be learned in one semester, this course is rigorous and may occasionally seem overwhelming, but it is also extremely rewarding. Material will include topics on Italian culture.

Italian Language and Culture II

 

prerequisite: completion of ITL 507 or of ITL 604 with a grade of at least a C.

 

In the introductory Italian course(s) (ITL 506 and 507, ITL 604) students were introduced to most of the basic grammatical structures of the Italian language and acquired a limited, basic vocabulary with limited time available for speaking practice.

In this intermediate course, students begin moving toward fluency in Italian by focusing on seven major communicative functions:

            describing,

            comparing,

            recommending and expressing opinions,

            narrating in the past,

            expressing likes and dislikes,

            hypothesizing and

            talking about the future.

Grammar from the introductory courses is reviewed, and new grammar points are presented, always with the intention of developing and strengthening students' abilities to use these seven communicative functions. A wide range of cultural topics is explored in the second-year courses, as each chapter of our text focuses on a different region of Italy.

 

Class is conducted in ITALIAN and emphasis is always placed on the students’ active participation in classroom activities, i.e., students are expected to come to class ready to speak Italian with the instructor and with each other.
