Graduate Programs in French
Financial Assistance and Teaching Experience
Designed to train students in the methods of scholarly research and to prepare them for college teaching, the French graduate programs and Italian Studies graduate program offer financial assistance in the form of Teaching Assistantships (TAs) and Assistant Instructorships (AIs). As teaching assistants, graduate students help faculty with the conduct and delivery of their courses. Graduate students who hold a Master's degree (or have completed 30 hours of graduate coursework) and who have completed a course in teaching methods may be eligible for employment as assistant instructors. AIs, though still under the supervision and direction of department faculty, teach their own courses (generally lower-division French or Italian language classes). Competitive fellowships administered by the graduate school are another possible source of financial support.

French and Italian Studies graduate students may be able to participate, as students or TAs, in the department's summer study abroad programs in Lyon or Rome. They will also become familiar with using innovative instructional technologies (faculty in the department of French and Italian have developed several award-winning projects) and may have opportunities to assist in the development of new projects. The teaching experience and skills acquired by French and Italian Studies graduate students will help them immensely in making the transition from graduate school to full-time employment.
Competitive study abroad scholarships available.
