French Graduate Program

The Department of French and Italian offers programs at the M.A. and Ph.D. levels in French Literature, French Linguistics, and Romance Linguistics. These programs are designed to train students in methods of scholarly research and prepare them ultimately for teaching at the university level. The M.A. degree, though it may prove useful as a credential for teaching in private secondary schools or in community colleges, is considered a step toward the Ph.D. rather than an independent professional degree.

Julia Emerson Fisher Walther Graduate Scholarships in French Studies

The Department of French and Italian is delighted to announce that, thanks to Mrs. Julia Walther's generous bequest, we will begin offering several merit-based graduate scholarships for outstanding students in French literature and linguistics beginning in fall 2009. The Julia Emerson Walther Scholars will receive generous multi-year packages that will include highly competitive stipends, professional development support, and pre-dissertation funding for extensive study in a francophone country.
