French Graduate Program

The Department of French & Italian offers programs at the Ph.D. level in French Linguistics and French Studies. These programs are designed to train students in methods of scholarly research and prepare them ultimately for teaching at the university level. The M.A. degree, though it may prove useful as a credential for teaching in private secondary schools or in community colleges, is considered a step toward the Ph.D. rather than an independent professional degree. Students with a BA or an MA (or their international equivalents) from an accredited university may apply directly to the Ph.D. program.

Julia Emerson Fisher Walther Graduate Scholarships in French Studies

Since the fall term of 2009, thanks to a generous bequest of Mrs. Julia Walther, the UT Department of French & Italian offers several merit-based graduate student scholarships for outstanding scholarly research in French Linguistics and Studies. The Julia Emerson Walther Scholars each receive generous, renewable award packages that include highly competitive stipends, tuition remission, professional development support, and pre-dissertation funding for extensive research in a francophone country.
