Deadlines for admission are:
Fall – January 15

The completed application form, all official transcripts from other universities or colleges attended, and Graduate Record Examination scores should be submitted to Graduate Admissions at the address listed above.

Applicants may request admission to a graduate program at either the M.A. level or the Ph.D. level. For admission at the M.A. level, applicants must have the equivalent of a B.A. major in Italian; for admission at the Ph.D. level, the equivalent of an M.A. in Italian. Transfer of graduate credits from other institutions must be recommended by the Department and approved by the Dean of Graduate Studies. No more than 6 semester hours of transfer credit can be approved for the M.A. degree.

Minimum requirements for admission to the Graduate School of the University of Texas:

1. Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or proof of equivalent training in a foreign institution.
2. Grade point average of at least 3.00 in upper-division (junior- and senior-level) coursework and in any graduate work already completed.
3. Official score on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
4. Adequate subject preparation for the proposed major. This attested by the student's prior course work, letters of reference, and personal statement.
5. Recommendation for acceptance by the Graduate Studies Committee for the proposed major area.

International students whose native language is not English must also submit scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

Documents required for application to the Department of French and Italian:

1. Duplicate copies of all transcripts.
2. Duplicate copy of official GRE scores.
3. Three letters of recommendation from professors acquainted with you and your work. Evaluation forms to attach to the letters may be printed from within the electronic application.
4. Brief personal statement of purpose explaining your reasons for wishing to pursue graduate study in Italian (this may be submitted with the electronic application or mailed separately to the Department). 
5. Applicants wishing to apply for Teaching Assistantships or Assistant Instructorships should submit the TA/AI application along with a cassette tape or CD recording consisting of a brief improvised statement in Italian giving reasons for applying to the University of Texas and a two-minute reading a of literary text in Italian. Those whose first language is not English must also submit a recording in English in the same format. Applicants need to also submit a writing sample in Italian: a paper for a class or honors thesis will suffice.
