Past Geography Society Officers

PRESIDENT:
rachRachel Snavely
Year in School: Senior
Major: Geography (GIS Track)
As Vice President of Education and Professional Development for the 2013-2014 school year I was in charge of compiling research, academic and professional development opportunities to share with the organization. I also started and organized the Geography Society’s monthly speaker series and helped kick off our educational outreach program. For the upcoming school year, I would like to see an increase in undergraduate research and student involvement within our department, as well as an increase in our organization’s membership. I have lots of ideas that we can implement during the fall (including more social events like happy hours) and I’m excited to see what the new school year will bring!

VICE PRESIDENT EDUCATION:
alison
Alison Simerly
Year in School: Junior
Major: Geography, Plan II Honors
Participated in a Wildlands Studies program on the Big Creek Wilderness Reserve in California, where she completed a portion of the 2013 southern sea otter population census, plant diversity transects, and stream surveys of the Steelhead Trout. This semester she's working as an intern with Niti Mishra to learn remote sensing techniques and become better acquainted with ENVI software. In the coming summer she will work at the Ugyen Wangchuck Institute for Conservation and Environment in Bhutan and attend the Ecological Society of America conference. Always keeping an eye out for interesting and geography-related articles, internship opportunities, and presentations, Alison excels at the role of keeping society members up to date on upcoming events and opportunities.

VICE PRESIDENT SOCIAL:
prestonPreston McLaughlin
Year in School: Senior
Major: Geography
I have acted as treasurer of the club in 2013-2014. During my time as treasurer I created a new club bank account, and have also made sure the club's finances have been in proper order.  As for the Vice President Social position, I have some good ideas for social events and volunteer opportunities.  I have dealt firsthand with the Geography Societie's event planning and coordinating. Thank you and Hook 'Em!

COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR:
mustafa
Mustafa Monk
Year In School: Freshman
Major: Geography
I have a fair amount of experience in social media, and I’m very enthusiastic to expand the club through the combined application of our online and campus presence . I see the role of communication director as a chance to grow with our club while at the same time connecting with incoming undergraduate students about geography as a subject of study and as a possible major. As Communications director, I’ll focus on a policy of expansion and promotion for the club, to help grow a stronger base for the future of the Society and for the study of Geography within the university.
