Bachelors in Urban Studies

In addition to its programs leading to the B.A. in Geography, including a track concentrating on Urban Geography, the Department of Geography and the Environment also manages a rigorous interdisciplinary program leading to a B.A. in Urban Studies. This program is suitable for highly motivated students who wish to pursue relevant work in multiple disciplines with a foundation in quantitative methods and urban studies methodologies.*

Major Requirements (2006-2008 catalog)

Note: the requirements for graduating under the 2004-2006 catalog will be substantially different than those under the previous catalog. If you entered Urban Studies prior to Fall 2004 you can check your degree requirements with the Undergraduate Advisor.

Urban Studies majors must take Mathematics 408C (Differential and Integral Calculus) or 408K (Differential Calculus) as well as Mathematics 316 (Elementary Statistical Methods). SSC 305 may be substituted for Mathematics 316. A grade of C or better is required in each. Mathematics 403K and 403L may not be counted toward this requirement.

The core of Urban Studies consists of four required courses:

Students must take 12 additional hours of upper division coursework in Urban Studies drawn from cross-listed courses in departments across the campus. Cross-listed courses can be found in the upper division section of the Registrar's Course Schedule. Cross-listed courses are listed as URB 350, 351, 352, 353, or 354. Students may take any of these multiple times as long as the courses are different (different titles prior to cross-listing under Urban Studies).

Finally, students need to complete 12 credit hours in a selected minor, with at least six hours of upper division coursework, and at least six hours completed on-campus.

A GPA (grade point average) of at least 2.0 in URB courses is required. Students in Urban Studies are also expected to meet the requirements of the University and of the College of Liberal Arts.
