Tanner Arrington (Geography undergraduate student) was recently awarded a prestigious UT-Austin College of Liberal Arts Rapoport-King Scholarship for 2009-2010. The Rapoport-King Scholarship supports Tanner’s honors thesis research (Paul Hudson - supervisor), which examines fluvial geomorphic processes along the San Marcos River of central Texas. The San Marcos River is a cherished natural resource because of providing abundant recreational opportunities, beautiful river scenery, and supporting rare aquatic ecology. Tanner is examining sediment transport in relation to aquatic habitat, specifically for the endangered Texas Wild Rice (Zizania texana) and Fountain Darter (Etheostoma fonticola), both of which are found exclusively within the San Marcos River. The project requires considerable field work, including hydrologic and bed load sampling. In addition to obtaining information critical for effective management of the San Marcos River, the research will provide important base-line data to government agencies that are considering removal of an approximately 100 year old mill dam to reestablish a more natural river environment.
