The Department of Geography and the Environment is pleased to congratulate Ph.D. student Gregory Schwartz for being invited and admitted to Phi Kappa Phi national academic honor society.  Founded in 1897 at the University of Maine, Phi Kappa Phi is the nation's oldest, largest, and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. His invitation was merited by academic performance, for achieving a 4.0 GPA in graduate school.

He was a 2013 Veselka Scholar, and recently presented his research at a department colloquium titled “Carving Out Space for Female Land Users in Costa  Rica.” His research interests include Latin America (Costa Rica), development, environmental conservation, gender, deforestation, and neoliberalism.
