Katia Avilés-Vázquez Elected Secretary-Treasurer of the AAG Geography of Food and Agriculture Specialty Group

The Department of Geography and the Environment is happy to announce that Ph.D. candidate Katia Avilés-Vázquez has been elected Secretary-Treasurer of the AAG Geography of Food and Agriculture Specialty Group at the Tampa AAG meetings.

Katia Avilés-Vázquez is a Ph.D. candidate supervised by Dr. Gregory Knapp.  Her dissertation research focuses on survival strategies of smallholder farmers in Puerto Rico.  She currently serves as the Environmental Affairs Coordinator for the Corporación del Proyecto ENLACE del Caño Martín Peña, San Juan. Tasks include promoting environmental awareness activities, while guaranteeing citizen participation throughout the process to address issues of environmental justice, health impacts and promotion of environmentally friendly practices and technologies.

The purpose of the Geographies of Food and Agriculture Specialty Group (GFASG) is to bring together Association of American Geographers (AAG) members who have mutual interests In the geography of food and agriculture. This specialty group also provides an intellectual home for the multiplicity of exciting studies being conducted surrounding issues of food and agriculture in every type of space: rural, urban, exurban, and wild. The group facilitates the sharing of ideas and relevant information among its members and others; stimulates research and intradisciplinary partnerships; and provides awards to facilitate research in the geographies of food and agriculture. The GFASG also encourages, facilitates, and sponsors the organization of paper sessions and discussion panels at the annual meeting of the AAG.
