Practicum: Internships in Applied Geography GRG 379L
Student Advising: Undergraduate Advisor - Calina Coakwell
Course Grading: Department Chair and/or staff
Offered Spring and Fall Semesters (Not During Summer Session). No formal class meetings
This course provides advanced undergraduate students with substantial geography background with the opportunity to gain practical experience in the application of geographical ideas and techniques. The best time to take an internship is during the last semester of your course work, after completing your techniques track in geography.
Internships are expected to involve 90-130 hours of work (6-9 hours a week), performed in activities which utilize and contribute to your education in geography.
This course can be used to fulfill any of the track requirements in geography.
Students should consult with the undergraduate advisor when they are ready to choose an internship.
Prerequisites:
Completion of at least 70 semester hours of coursework, including 12 semester hours of geography and consent of the Undergraduate Advisor. Note that this course must be taken under the direction of the indicated instructor; it is not a general purpose conference course.
Textbook:
Students must read the packet and refer to them in their paper. Note that you must read these materials and use as many of them as feasible for your course paper. If you have any difficulties in reading these materials, please notify the undergraduate advisor.
Grading:
Grading is based on evidence of satisfactory completion of at least 90 hours of work, evaluation by the supervisor, and one ten-page paper.
Your superviser may send his or her evaluation on letterhead, or may use the attached sheet. The evaluation should be sent to
Undergraduate Advisor, Department of Geography
1 University Station #A3100
University of Texas, Austin TX 78712
and should be sent, at latest, seven days prior to the last day of regular classes. NOTE: it is the student's responsibility to make sure that the supervisor is aware of the need to send an evaluation and is available to do so during the specified time. Late or missing evaluations will result in lower grades or incompletes.
In your paper you should (1) describe your work in the internship and evaluate its contribution to your personal and professional growth as a geographer; (2) discuss the utility and relevance of your university training to your experience in the workplace; and (3) reflect on the articles in the online readings in terms of the issues they raise about liberal education, "real world" experience, jobs, and careers. Papers MUST refer to the online readings.
They should be turned in to Calina Coakwell, undergraduate advisor seven days before the last class day.
Late papers will result in a lower grade if not received by 5:00 p.m. seven days before the last day of regular class. Please check with the undergraduate advisor to determine the exact due date each semester. If unusual circumstances justify an incomplete, it is the student's responsibility to communicate these to the instructor in a timely fashion.
Papers will be kept by the Department. If you would like to keep a copy for your records, make the copy before turning the paper in.
IMPORTANT: YOU MUST PRINT OUT AND USE THE FOLLOWING TWO FORMS:
You must print out and complete the agreement form as soon as you have been hired for an internship and return it to the undergraduate advisor.
You also must print out and give the supervisor evaluation form to your supervisor in time for her or him to complete it. It must be turned in to Calina Coakwell.
